Confluence of rivers
The Gier meets the Rhône here, and the junction of the narrow valley with the broad river gives the map its defining shape and a clear focal point.

Givors lies on the right bank of the Rhône, south of Lyon, at the point where the small Gier river flows into it. From above, the town is a long strip following the Rhône, hemmed in by railway lines, a motorway and steep slopes. The Gier valley opens westward toward Saint-Étienne, and the town's streets wind along both waterways.
Givors grew as an industrial town, known for its glassworks and its position on transport routes between the Rhône and the Loire basin. A canal once connected it to Rive-de-Gier, and its route influenced how the town developed. Givors is also known for the Cité des Étoiles, a housing complex by architect Jean Renaudie with terraced, star-shaped forms.
A Givors map poster shows all these layers at once: the broad sweep of the Rhône, the narrow Gier valley, the parallel lines of rail and road, and the dense old centre caught between them. It is a map of a working river town, complex and full of movement, that looks especially strong in black and white.

Transport corridor
Railway lines and a motorway run parallel to the Rhône, drawing long straight lines that press the town between the river and the hills.
Star-shaped housing
The Cité des Étoiles, Jean Renaudie's terraced housing complex, adds angular, unusual forms to the street pattern, recognisable from above.
