Goroka sits at about 1,600 metres in the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea, the provincial capital of a region better known for its mountains than its roads. From above, the most distinctive line in town is not a street at all but the long, straight runway that cuts through the centre, with the grid of commercial blocks and residential lanes arranged on either side of it.
Beyond the compact centre, the street pattern loosens quickly. Roads follow the natural shape of the valley, bending around slopes and creek lines before giving way to scattered settlements and garden plots.
