Great Bend is named for its setting: the point where the Arkansas River, flowing east across Kansas, swings in a broad arc to the southeast. The town lies on the north side of that curve. On a map the river's meander contrasts sharply with the rigid grid of streets and the square-mile section roads that divide the surrounding farmland into even blocks.
The Santa Fe Trail once followed this stretch of the river, and the town grew up as a railroad and cattle town in the 1870s. Today it is the seat of Barton County, with the courthouse on a square at the centre of downtown. Just to the northeast lies Cheyenne Bottoms, one of the largest inland wetlands in the United States and a major stop for migrating birds.
