Guwahati Map Poster & Print

Guwahati lies along the southern bank of the Brahmaputra, one of the largest rivers in Asia. The river is wide and dominates the northern edge of the map, with islands and sandbars in its channel. Hills rise behind the city to the south and push the streets into valleys and along the river. The result is a stretched, uneven outline.

On Nilachal Hill, overlooking the river, stands the Kamakhya Temple, one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage sites in India. In the river itself is Umananda, a small island with a temple, often described as one of the smallest inhabited river islands in the world. Dispur, the capital of Assam, lies within the city.

To the south-west is Deepor Beel, a large freshwater lake and protected wetland. The Saraighat bridges cross the Brahmaputra to the north bank. A Guwahati map poster shows how closely the city is bound by water and hills, and how its streets find their way between them.

01

The Brahmaputra

A vast river running along the city's northern side. It is wide enough that islands such as Umananda sit in the middle of the channel.

02

Nilachal Hill

The hill topped by the Kamakhya Temple rises above the riverbank. Winding roads climb its slopes in curves among the straighter city streets.

03

Deepor Beel

A large wetland lake south-west of the centre with an irregular shoreline. It is a broad open shape at the edge of the built-up area.
