Herāt lies in the fertile valley of the Hari River in western Afghanistan, an oasis surrounded by farmland and framed by mountains to the north. The river runs south of the city, and irrigation channels branching from it feed the gardens and fields around the urban area. On a map the city appears as a dense core set in a patchwork of cultivated land.
The old city has a remarkably clear plan: a nearly square area once enclosed by walls, divided into quarters by two main streets that cross near its centre. At its northern edge stands the citadel, Qala Ikhtiyaruddin, and inside the old city lies the Friday Mosque with its tiled courtyards. Later districts spread outward beyond the old walls.
For centuries Herāt was a major cultural centre on routes between Persia, Central Asia and India, and the minarets of the Musalla complex still rise in the north of the city. A Herāt map poster shows the square old town clearly within the larger modern city. It is a rare case where an ancient plan can still be read in today's streets.
Two main streets cross within the nearly square historic core, dividing it into four quarters of dense lanes and courtyards, a layout that stands out sharply on the map.
The fortress of Qala Ikhtiyaruddin sits on raised ground at the old city's edge, its massive walls forming a distinct shape among the surrounding streets.
South of the city, the river and its irrigation channels run through farmland, framing the urban area with the fine lines of fields and canals.

Cur Herāt
For many Afghans living abroad, Herāt remains a city of memory, of gardens, courtyards and long family histories. A map of its streets, with the quartered old city at the centre, is a calm and lasting way to stay connected to it.
