Valley-floor layout
The town stretches along the level ground at the bottom of its valley, which gives it a long, linear footprint on the map.

Heyan Map Poster & Print
Heyan lies in the mountainous northeast of Chongqing municipality, a region of steep ridges, deep valleys and terraced slopes. In this terrain, towns grow where the land allows. Heyan’s built-up area stretches along the valley floor and climbs a little way up the surrounding hills, so it forms an elongated shape rather than a compact block.
The map is shaped by relief. Streets run parallel to the valley, cross streets are short and steep, and roads leading out of town wind through the hills to neighbouring settlements. Beyond the town edge, small fields and scattered hamlets cover the slopes, and the road network thins into narrow, winding lines.
A Heyan map poster shows how people build in this kind of landscape: close together, along the one level strip available, with the hills setting firm limits. For anyone from the town, the long, narrow outline is instantly familiar. For anyone else, it is a quiet study of settlement in rugged country.

Winding mountain roads
The routes out of Heyan follow the contours of the surrounding hills. They form loose curves that contrast with the denser town streets.
Terraced surroundings
Farmland on the slopes of northeastern Chongqing surrounds the town, with scattered hamlets linked by narrow tracks.
