Hidaka lies in western Saitama, where the flat Kantō Plain meets the first ridges of the Chichibu mountains. The Koma River winds through the city in a series of tight bends, and houses, rice fields and small woods follow its course. To the north and west the land rises into forested hills, so the map has a clear division between settled lowland and a more open, contoured upland.
The best-known spot is Kinchakuda, a bend of the Koma River so rounded that it resembles a drawstring purse, which is what its name refers to. Each autumn the woodland along the bank fills with millions of red spider lilies, drawing large numbers of visitors. On the map the loop is striking even without the flowers: a near-circle of water enclosing fields.
Hidaka also holds Koma Shrine, associated with settlers from the ancient Korean kingdom of Goguryeo who established Koma District here in the eighth century. The river crosses Hidaka in a sequence of meanders, and roads, rail lines and settlements all bend with it, drawing the eye across the sheet from west to east.
