Winschoterdiep
The canal runs through the whole length of the town. It is the backbone of the map, and most of Hoogezand's streets follow it.

Hoogezand grew as a peat colony in the seventeenth century, and its shape still reflects that origin. On the map, the town stretches in a long ribbon along the Winschoterdiep, the canal that runs east toward Winschoten. Houses and businesses line the water on both sides, and side canals and streets branch out at intervals.
The town was known for its shipyards, which built small seagoing vessels along the canal for many years. Hoogezand merged with neighbouring Sappemeer in 1949, and since 2018 both have been part of the municipality of Midden-Groningen. The Zuidlaardermeer lake lies a short way to the southwest.
A Hoogezand map poster captures the linear shape of a canal town. The Winschoterdiep, the parallel streets, the side canals and the flat fields around them create a strong, horizontal composition. It suits anyone from Hoogezand, and anyone drawn to the ordered landscapes of the northern Netherlands.

Ribbon development
Buildings line the canal in a long, narrow strip. This is a typical pattern for Dutch peat colonies and gives the town its elongated shape.
Side canals and fields
Smaller waterways and straight roads branch out from the main canal into the surrounding fields. They create a regular, grid-like texture.

Cur Hoogezand
Tabula quae aliquid significat
Hoogezand is a town with a clear story: peat digging, canals, shipbuilding and the gradual growth of a ribbon of houses along the water. A map of it is both a personal keepsake and a strong graphic piece for a wall.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps with a family name or the year you moved in. Blueprint suits the canal and shipbuilding history, and Paper gives a softer, archival look. HD files are $9, and printed posters ship from a nearby partner, with an optional wooden frame.
