Esker ridges
Long glacial ridges cross the municipality and roads follow their crests, so the map shows streets running in unusually straight lines between the lakes.

Kangasala lies just east of Tampere in the Pirkanmaa region, in a landscape shaped by the last ice age. Long gravel ridges called eskers run across the land, and lakes fill the hollows between them. The town centre sits on one of these narrow strips with water on both sides, and the map shows how closely the streets follow the lie of the land.
Large lakes such as Längelmävesi and Roine lie to the east and north, with irregular shorelines full of bays, points and islands. Roads run along the ridges because they are the only dry, level routes. The scenery inspired Zachris Topelius's poem A Summer Day in Kangasala, which was later set to music and is still widely sung in Finland.
A Kangasala map poster is mostly about water and ridges, with the town's streets and neighbourhoods threaded between them. In black and white it makes a strong composition: the lakes become large open shapes and the land reads as a series of narrow, deliberate lines, like a drawing made with very few strokes.

Lake shorelines
Längelmävesi, Roine and neighbouring lakes spread across the map as broad, irregular shapes. Their many bays and islands create intricate edges.
Narrow town centre
The centre is squeezed onto land between two bodies of water. That gives it an elongated shape that is easy to recognise from above.

Cur Kangasala
Tabula quae aliquid significat
Kangasala suits anyone attached to Finnish lake country, with its summer cottages, lakeside walks and ridges above the water. The map's large open shapes make it especially calm on a wall, and it pairs naturally with a poster of neighbouring Tampere.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line with a place name, a year or the address of a summer cottage, then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Buy the HD files for $9, or order a matte print with an optional wooden frame.
