Naryn River corridor
The Naryn runs through the valley beside the town and sets the main axis of the map. Roads and blocks line up along its course rather than across it.

Kara-Kul’ Map Poster & Print
Kara-Kul’ lies in the Jalal-Abad Region of western Kyrgyzstan, deep in the valley of the Naryn River. The town grew up in the Soviet era to serve the construction and operation of the Toktogul hydroelectric scheme, one of the largest power installations in Central Asia. Its purpose shows in its plan: practical, planned streets laid out wherever the terrain allows.
From above, the geography dominates everything. Steep, bare mountainsides close in from both sides, and the town fills the narrow flat ground along the river. Streets run parallel to the valley, with shorter connectors climbing only as far as the slopes permit. Beyond the edge of town the map empties quickly into mountain terrain.
A Kara-Kul’ map poster turns this constraint into a strong composition. The built area forms a long, dense band, the river threads beside it, and the empty space around it reads as the mountains themselves. It is a clear image of a town shaped almost entirely by water and rock.

Planned Soviet blocks
Residential areas built for the hydropower project follow a regular, functional layout, giving parts of the town a more ordered pattern than the terrain around it.
Enclosing mountain slopes
Steep slopes rise on either side of the valley, so the street network stops abruptly. The resulting white margins give the poster a strong, elongated shape.

Tabula quae aliquid significat
Many people who worked on the Naryn hydropower cascade, or grew up in their families, have ties to Kara-Kul’. A map of the town is a way to keep that chapter visible, drawn with the same clarity as the engineering that built it.
