Kyshtym lies on the eastern slopes of the Southern Urals in Chelyabinsk Oblast, in a landscape of lakes, forest and low ridges. The town grew around eighteenth-century ironworks and the ponds dammed to power them. On the map its streets curve along the water, and in wider views larger lakes such as Sugomak and Irtyash appear nearby.
The ironworks era left a manor house, often called the White House, which still stands in the centre. Internationally, the town's name is also attached to the 1957 Kyshtym disaster at the Mayak nuclear facility. Mayak lay some distance away in a closed city, and the accident took Kyshtym's name because it was the nearest town on public maps.
A Kyshtym map poster puts the emphasis on land and water. The winding shorelines, the dams and the forest edges give the print organic shapes, and the lakes become the main forms of the composition. The small street grid sits among them almost like an inset.

Urals lakes
In wider views, nearby lakes spread across the frame. Their irregular outlines contrast with the small, tight pattern of the streets.
Forested ridges
Low wooded ridges surround the town, keeping the edges of the map mostly free of buildings and giving the lakes and streets a clear setting.

Kyshtym prints are chosen by people from the town and by those who love the lake country of the Southern Urals. The map shows Kyshtym as a place of water and forest, not just a name in a historical footnote.
