Lar lies in the Deoria district of eastern Uttar Pradesh, close to the border with Bihar, on the wide, flat plain of the Ganges basin. On a map, the town is a dense centre of narrow lanes and closely packed buildings. The fabric loosens quickly toward the edges, where a surrounding patchwork of cultivated land takes over.
The plain here is almost level, so roads run long and fairly straight between neighbouring towns and villages, and the railway adds another firm line across the landscape. Small ponds and water tanks, a common feature of settlements in the region, appear as scattered pale shapes among the streets and fields.
