The upper Don
The river curves past the town below its high bank. It gives the poster a long, flowing line and a wide band of floodplain on the opposite side.

Lebedyan’ Map Poster & Print
Lebedyan is on the upper Don in Lipetsk Oblast, one of the old towns of Russia's central black earth region. It was once famous for its horse fairs, which Ivan Turgenev described in the story Lebedyan in A Sportsman's Sketches. It is also the birthplace of the writer Yevgeny Zamyatin, author of the novel We.
The town sits on the high bank of the Don, and the map shows it laid out against that natural edge. A fairly regular grid of streets covers the higher ground. At its ends the streets break down into slopes and gullies that lead to the river. On the far side, the valley opens into floodplain and farmland.
A Lebedyan’ map poster brings together the regular plan of a provincial Russian town and the free curves of the Don. The Trinity Monastery near the river is one of the best-known landmarks. The real subject, though, is the meeting of town and valley, drawn in fine, even lines.

Grid on high ground
A regular pattern of streets and blocks covers the higher ground. It is typical of Russian provincial town planning and prints crisply in all five styles.
Slopes to the river
Where the high ground meets the valley, streets end in slopes and gullies. They soften the edge of the grid and trace the shape of the riverbank.
