Tabula
Legnica is one of the oldest cities in Lower Silesia, and its map still shows it. At the centre is a tight old town of irregular streets and a market square. It is enclosed by a ring of wider roads that follow the line of the former fortifications. Outside that ring the city spreads out in later layers: nineteenth-century blocks, prewar villa streets and postwar housing estates on the edges.
The Kaczawa River runs along the northern side of the centre. Next to it is a large city park, a long green band that stands out on the map as the clearest open space near the core. The Piast castle sits at the edge of the old town, near the river. It is a reminder that Legnica was once the seat of a Silesian duchy. The Battle of Legnica, fought nearby in 1241 against the Mongol army, is its best-known historical date.
The twentieth century left its own marks. After 1945 the city was headquarters of the Soviet Northern Group of Forces until the early 1990s, and parts of it were closed off for decades. Copper smelting also became central to the local economy. A Legnica map poster captures all of this: the dense historic centre, the river and park, and the looser districts around them.

The river curves past the north side of the centre, and the large city park stretches along its banks. Together they form a soft green edge beside the dense old town.
The Piast castle stands at the corner of the old town near the river. Its large footprint and courtyard make a clear anchor point in the street pattern.

Cur Legnica
Legnica means different things to different people. For some it is the old ducal town, for others the garrison city of the Cold War, and for many simply home. A map shows the place without taking sides. The ring road, the river and the park are what everyone recognises.
