Leixlip Map Poster & Print

Leixlip lies on the western edge of the Dublin area in County Kildare, where the Rye Water meets the River Liffey. The name comes from Old Norse and is usually explained as salmon leap, a reference to the river. On a map, the old village sits at the meeting of the two rivers, with Leixlip Castle overlooking the confluence.

North of the centre, the Royal Canal passes through, and to the west, a dam on the Liffey forms Leixlip Reservoir. Newer housing estates spread over the higher ground, and the large Intel campus sits to the west. Arthur Guinness opened his first brewery in Leixlip in 1756, before moving to St. James's Gate in Dublin.

A Leixlip map poster combines several lines of water: the winding Liffey, the smaller Rye Water, the straight canal and the broad reservoir. Around them are the curving estates and main roads, including the motorway to the west of Ireland. It is a detailed, layered image with plenty to recognise.

Two rivers meeting

The Rye Water joins the Liffey at the old village centre, below Leixlip Castle, the original heart of the town.

02

Royal Canal

The canal cuts a straight, deliberate line across the north of the town, contrasting with the curves of the two rivers.

03

Leixlip Reservoir

West of the town, a dam on the Liffey creates a reservoir, a broad water body surrounded by green space.
