Lennestadt Map Poster & Print

Lennestadt is a town in the Sauerland, in the district of Olpe, and it is quite unusual on a map. Rather than one centre, it is a chain of villages spread along the valley of the Lenne and its side valleys, brought together into a single municipality in 1969.

The hills are steep and heavily forested, so building follows the valley floors. River, railway and road run side by side through the narrow valleys, and the settlements string along them like beads. The high ground between them stays almost empty, a dark mass of woodland on the landscape.

The village of Elspe is known for its long-running open-air festival based on the Western stories of Karl May. A Lennestadt map poster shows the true shape of the place: a branching pattern of valleys, each lined with houses, with the Lenne as the main thread.

The Lenne valley

The river winds through the main valley, with road and rail following closely beside it, creating three parallel lines that tie the town together.

02

Chain of villages

Instead of one centre, several villages appear as separate clusters along the valleys, so the poster reads like a small constellation.

03

Forested hills

Between the valleys, wooded slopes leave broad unbuilt areas, giving the design strong empty spaces and emphasising the valley shapes.
