Tabula
Luton sits in a gap in the Chiltern Hills, in the upper valley of the River Lea, which rises on the town's north-western side. On a map the town is a dense mass of terraced streets and suburban estates, bounded to the west by the M1 motorway and to the east by the runway of London Luton Airport. Green space appears in parks and on the chalk slopes at the edges.
For much of its history Luton was the centre of English hat-making, especially straw hats, which is why its football club is still nicknamed the Hatters. In the twentieth century it became a major centre of car production, and today it is known for its airport, its university and a population with roots across the world.
A Luton map poster shows a town of tight Victorian streets around the centre, larger estates beyond, and the heavy lines of motorway, railway and runway that define its edges. Wardown Park and the river corridor bring softer shapes into the composition. It is an honest, detailed portrait of a working town with its own long industrial story.
On the eastern side of town, the runway of London Luton Airport draws a long straight bar across the high ground, one of the most recognisable shapes on the map.
The Lea rises in the north-west of Luton and passes through the town, a modest watercourse that links parks and green corridors on its way south toward London.
North of the centre, Wardown Park and its lake form a green pocket among dense streets, with the house that holds the town's museum set in the grounds.
