Madauros ruins
The remains of the Roman city lie close to the town. On the map they form an open area, a quiet reminder of the Latin writers linked to the site.

M’Daourouch lies on the high plateau of Souk Ahras province in northeastern Algeria, not far from the Tunisian border. From above, the modern town forms a compact grid of streets and blocks. Open farmland and low, bare hills stretch around it, with roads leading out across a wide landscape of fields and pasture. Its sharp edges stand out clearly against the empty land around it.
Just outside the town lie the ruins of Madauros, an ancient Roman city. Madauros was the birthplace of the writer Apuleius, author of The Golden Ass, and it was here that the young Augustine of Hippo went to school. The remains of the forum, baths, theatre and a Byzantine fort still mark the site today.
An M’Daourouch map poster shows two layers of history side by side: the orderly modern town and, nearby, the outline of the ancient city. The surrounding plateau is left almost empty, crossed only by roads and tracks. The design is spare and strong, well suited to anyone interested in North Africa's Roman past or with family roots here.

The present town is laid out in a fairly regular pattern of streets and blocks. It makes a compact, clearly defined shape on the plateau.
Fields, pasture and low hills stretch around the town. They appear as broad open space crossed by a few roads and farm tracks.
