Myŏngch’ŏn is the seat of a county in North Hamgyong Province, in the far northeast of North Korea. The town lies in a valley a short distance inland from the East Sea coast, and its map is shaped by the terrain: a compact built-up area on the valley floor, a few main roads following the lowland, and steep ground rising on either side.
Open map data for this region is limited, so a map of Myŏngch’ŏn shows the essentials rather than every lane: the main roads, the watercourses of the valley and the outline of the settlement. The mountains of the surrounding area include the Chilbo range, long celebrated in Korea for its dramatic rock formations.
A Myŏngch’ŏn map poster is an unusual object: a quiet, spare map of a place few people outside Korea have seen. For those with family roots in North Hamgyong, it can be a meaningful way to hold a picture of an ancestral home, drawn with the same care as any other city.

Main roads
A small number of roads carry most of the connections in and out of town, running along the valley and giving the map its principal lines.
Mountain country
The ground around the town rises into rugged hills and mountains, part of a region known in Korea for the rock peaks of the Chilbo range.

Tabula quae aliquid significat
Families separated by the division of Korea sometimes look for ways to see the places their parents or grandparents came from. A map of Myŏngch’ŏn offers that, with a title in your own words, a subtitle for a family name or year, and a coordinates line.
Paper and Sand give the map a soft, archival quality suited to a family history, while Noir makes it quietly dramatic. The HD files are $9 for six sizes, each as a 300 DPI PNG and print-ready PDF, with a free 900 px preview beforehand.
