Nadiād lies on the plains of central Gujarat in Kheda district, on the main railway and expressway corridor between Ahmedabad and Vadodara. On a map the old town appears as a tightly knit knot of narrow lanes and closely packed blocks, surrounded by newer residential areas on broader, straighter roads. The railway draws a strong line across the town, and ponds appear as open shapes among the streets.
The town is known as the birthplace of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, a leader of India's independence movement and the country's first Deputy Prime Minister. It is also home to the Santram Mandir, an important temple, and has a long literary tradition, having produced several notable Gujarati writers. Today it is a district headquarters and a regional centre for trade and education.
