Jialing meanders
The river bends back on itself through the city, drawing long, smooth curves that dominate the poster and give it an almost calligraphic line.

Nanchong stands in the hilly middle of the Sichuan Basin on the Jialing River, and the river decides almost everything about its shape. The Jialing winds through this stretch in wide meanders, and the city has grown along and between its bends, so districts face each other across the water and the built-up area follows the river's curves rather than a single grid.
Bridges tie the banks together at intervals, and the older centre sits close to the water, while newer districts spread across flatter ground and onto the opposite shore. Behind them the land rises into rounded hills cut by small valleys and terraced fields, which give the edges of the map a softer, broken pattern than the dense riverside core.
Nanchong has long been known for silk and is often called the silk capital of western China. The historian Chen Shou, author of the Records of the Three Kingdoms, came from this area. A Nanchong map poster puts the river's loops at the centre of the sheet, with the city's streets wrapped around them like a loosely wound coil.

River bridges
Several crossings stitch the districts together, each appearing as a short straight stroke across the water, and they explain how the city reads as one place.
Basin hills
Around the urban core, low hills and small valleys break the street pattern into curved, irregular pieces, typical of the rolling landscape of central Sichuan.

Tabula quae aliquid significat
A Nanchong map works as a portrait of the river as much as of the city. It suits someone who grew up on its banks, a family from the surrounding counties, or anyone drawn to the shape of a strongly meandering river.
