Nanmen is a town in the northeast of Chongqing Municipality, in the hilly country of the Yangtze basin. The name means south gate, a common place name in China. Like many towns in this region, it has grown wherever flat land is available. Its streets pack into the valley floor and along roads that follow the contours of the hills.
From above, the result is a map of lines that bend rather than cross. Roads snake along slopes and valley bottoms, and built-up areas form long, narrow clusters instead of blocks. The terrain around the town is rugged and green, covered with farmland and forest. In a black and white print it appears as wide open space.
A Nanmen map poster captures a kind of settlement typical of inland Chongqing: dense where the land allows it, sparse where the slopes rise. It is a quiet, characterful subject for anyone with family ties to the area, or for anyone drawn to places shaped by mountains rather than by planners.

Contour roads
Roads in and out of town curve along the hillsides, adding smooth, winding lines that give the map a sense of movement.
Open hill country
Rugged ridges and farmland surround the town. They appear as broad white areas that frame the dense centre and emphasise the mountain setting.
