Nara-shi Map Poster & Print

Nara was Japan's capital from 710 as Heijō-kyō, laid out on a grid based on the Chinese capital of Chang'an. The imperial palace site to the west is now a large open field, and parts of that old grid still show in the straight, evenly spaced streets of the city's western and central districts.

East of the centre the map opens up into Nara Park, where the city's well-known deer wander between temples and shrines. Tōdai-ji, home to the Great Buddha, sits at the northern edge. Kasuga Taisha lies against the forest further east, and the grassy slope of Mount Wakakusa rises behind them both.

A Nara-shi map poster shows the two sides of the city side by side. To the west is the orderly street network of houses and stations, and to the east are wide lawns, ponds and forest paths winding up into the hills. The line where the streets stop and the sacred landscape begins is one of the clearest in any Japanese city.

01

Heijō Palace site

The former imperial palace grounds form a large, flat, almost empty rectangle in the west of the city. It is a quiet reminder of the capital's original eighth-century plan.

02

Nara Park

Lawns, ponds and temple grounds on the eastern side of the city, home to free-roaming deer. It appears as a soft, open area threaded with narrow paths.

03

Eastern hills

Mount Wakakusa and the Kasugayama forest rise behind the temples. At the edge of the poster, dense city blocks give way to unbroken woodland.

Cur Nara-shi

Tabula quae aliquid significat

Nara stays with people who have walked from the station to Tōdai-ji or lived there as students or teachers. The map records that route, from a planned grid to the calm of the park and the hills.

Put the name of a temple, a trip date or a family name in the title, and adjust the subtitle and coordinates. Paper and Sand go well with the city's temple architecture, and Classic black & white, Noir and Blueprint are also offered.
