Pickering stretches along the north shore of Lake Ontario on Toronto's eastern edge, in Durham Region. The southern part of the city is a dense weave of suburban crescents and cul-de-sacs, cut east to west by Highway 401 and the lakeshore rail line. Further north the grid of concession roads takes over, and the map opens into fields, woodlots and scattered hamlets.
Its most distinctive coastal shape is Frenchman's Bay, a sheltered lagoon behind a narrow sandbar, lined with marinas and small parks. Nearby, the large Pickering Nuclear Generating Station fills a squared-off block of shoreline. To the west, the Rouge River valley and Rouge National Urban Park form a wide natural boundary with Toronto.
