Pompei Map Poster & Print

Pompei is a town of two street plans. On one side lies the excavated Roman city, a remarkably clear grid of straight streets and blocks that was buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. On the other lies the modern town, whose streets grew up around a large sanctuary and follow the gentler logic of the Sarno plain.

The modern centre formed in the late nineteenth century around the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary, which still draws pilgrims. Next to it, the archaeological park preserves long straight roads such as the Via dell'Abbondanza, a forum, theatres, and an amphitheatre at the eastern edge. The volcano stands to the northwest.

A Pompei map poster places these two worlds side by side. The ancient grid, precise and walled, meets the looser modern streets around it, and the whole composition is read against the slopes of Vesuvius. Few maps show two thousand years of urban history this plainly.

The Roman grid

The excavated city shows long straight streets and rectangular blocks inside its walls, a street plan still readable almost two thousand years after the eruption.

02

Sanctuary square

The modern town gathers around the large sanctuary and its square, which forms the centre of today's Pompei.

03

The amphitheatre

At the eastern edge of the excavations, the oval of the Roman amphitheatre stands out as one of the most recognisable shapes on the map.
