Puławy lies on the right bank of the Vistula in eastern Poland, between Warsaw and Lublin. The town rises above the river's broad floodplain, and its streets spread out from a historic core along the high bank. A long road bridge crosses the Vistula, and the far bank is mostly woodland and meadows.
In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries Puławy was the seat of the Czartoryski family, and their palace and landscaped park remain its centrepiece. In the park stands the Temple of the Sibyl, which housed the first museum in Poland. Today the town is also known for a large nitrogen fertiliser plant on its outskirts.
