Valley-floor streets
Buildings and streets keep to the valley, a clear example of how Chongqing's mountains shape settlement. The built area tends to be long and narrow rather than round.

Qinglong Map Poster & Print
Qinglong lies in the mountainous eastern part of Chongqing municipality, in the upland country around the Three Gorges stretch of the Yangtze. Here the terrain decides everything. From above, the town's streets gather on the valley floor, while roads climb out in tight bends and villages sit wherever the slopes briefly level off.
The name means Green Dragon and is shared by several places across China, so this Qinglong is best identified by its setting in eastern Chongqing. The limestone mountains of the region produce deep valleys and abrupt ridges. On a map, the most striking feature is often the contrast between dense streets below and nearly empty hillsides above.
A Qinglong map poster builds its composition on that contrast. The black lines of streets cluster where the ground allows, and the white space around them stands in for the mountains. The map says a great deal about the geography through what it leaves blank around the town.

Switchback roads
Roads leaving town climb the slopes in repeated bends, producing tight zigzag lines that become a distinctive graphic detail on the poster.
Mountain white space
Large areas of steep hillside carry few roads. The open space this leaves on the map emphasises the density of the town below and the scale of the terrain.

Tabula quae aliquid significat
People from eastern Chongqing often live and work far from home, in Chongqing's city districts, in Chengdu or on the coast. A map of Qinglong keeps the shape of the valley in view as a reminder of a specific place that few maps show.
Change the title and subtitle to a family name, a hometown line or a date, and adjust the coordinates. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, and buy the HD files for $9 or a printed poster on matte paper.
