Rioja is a provincial capital in the San Martín region of northern Peru, set in the Alto Mayo valley on the eastern side of the Andes. The land here is unusually flat for the region, and the town has spread across it in a regular pattern of blocks centred on a main square, in the tradition of Spanish colonial town planning.
Around the town, the valley floor is given over to cultivated fields, many of them used for rice, crossed by streams, farm tracks and irrigation channels. The main road through the Alto Mayo links Rioja with Moyobamba and other towns of the valley. Further out, the ground climbs into forested hills, and the map changes from straight lines to looser, natural contours.
A Rioja map poster reflects that setting: a clear, repeated grid in the middle, agricultural land around it and the rise of the valley sides at the margins. It is a modest, legible composition, well suited to people from San Martín who want a lasting image of home, or to travellers who passed through the Alto Mayo.

Maps of smaller towns carry particular weight for people who have moved away. A poster of Rioja keeps the pattern of familiar streets in sight, quietly recalling the square, the valley and the road home.
