This Rive Gauche is not the Left Bank of Paris but an area of Versailles, named after the Versailles Château Rive Gauche station. The station takes its name from the railway that reached Versailles from Paris along the left bank of the Seine in 1840, and it stands a short walk from the palace. On a map the area is framed by the grand avenues that shape the whole royal town.
Versailles was planned around its palace, and the pattern is plain from above. Three broad avenues, the Avenue de Saint-Cloud, the Avenue de Paris and the Avenue de Sceaux, fan out eastward from the Place d'Armes in front of the château. The Rive Gauche area lies south-east of the palace, close to these avenues, where the formal seventeenth-century plan meets later streets and railway land.
The palace and its gardens stretch westward, and the old Saint-Louis quarter lies close by. A Rive Gauche map poster set on these coordinates shows how the station district fits into that larger composition: straight tree-lined avenues, the orderly blocks between them, and the vast open ground of the château and its park nearby.

Versailles Château Rive Gauche station, the end of the line from Paris along the left bank of the Seine, sits within the street pattern close to the palace.
The château, its forecourt and the formal gardens beyond form a vast open area nearby, a striking contrast to the tighter blocks of the town.
