Tunbridge Wells Common
The large open common sits close to the centre, a broad, irregular space of trees and grass that gives the map an uncommonly green heart.

Royal Tunbridge Wells Map Poster & Print
Royal Tunbridge Wells lies on hilly ground in west Kent, on the edge of the High Weald. Its streets do not form a grid. They curve along ridges and slopes, following the terrain in long, flowing lines. At the centre of the map, the Common appears as a large open space of woodland and grass, surrounded on all sides by houses and roads.
The town grew around the Chalybeate Spring, discovered in the seventeenth century, and the colonnaded Pantiles beside it became the centre of a fashionable spa. Georgian and Victorian districts followed, with terraces, crescents and villas spreading up the hills. Parks such as Calverley Grounds and Dunorlan Park add more green spaces across the map.
The town received its Royal title from King Edward VII in 1909, and it is still one of only a few towns in England with the prefix. A Royal Tunbridge Wells map poster shows a spa town shaped by its hills: winding streets, a wide common and the green spaces around it.

The Pantiles
The historic colonnaded walk next to the Chalybeate Spring marks the original spa, at the south-west edge of the town centre.
Hillside streets
Roads curve along the slopes in crescents and long arcs, creating a flowing pattern that is very different from a planned grid.
