Tabula
Sbeitla lies on the high steppe of central Tunisia, in Kasserine Governorate. Beside the modern town are the ruins of Sufetula, a Roman city whose paved streets, forum and temples still show a clear orthogonal plan. Seen from above, the two settlements sit side by side, one living and one archaeological.
The forum of Sufetula is known for its three temples standing together, usually linked to Jupiter, Juno and Minerva. The site is entered through a gateway arch. In 647 the area saw one of the first great battles of the Arab conquest of North Africa, fought against the Byzantine governor Gregory.
A Sbeitla map poster shows both layers of the place at once. The modern streets and main roads run toward Kasserine and Kairouan, while the regular Roman grid lies next to them across a wadi. The surrounding steppe and olive plots stay quiet around the edges, and the ancient plan takes the attention.
The excavated streets of Sufetula form a regular pattern of blocks around the forum, one of the clearest surviving Roman town plans in Tunisia.
The enclosed forum with its three temples forms a compact rectangle at the centre of the ancient city, a precise shape on the map.
A seasonal watercourse runs past the ruins and the modern town, a natural line on the open steppe that divides the old city from the new.
