Shafter Map Poster & Print
Shafter lies in Kern County, California, northwest of Bakersfield on the flat floor of the southern San Joaquin Valley. From above, the town is a set of neat residential and commercial blocks, surrounded by the huge rectangles of irrigated fields that dominate this part of the state.
The land around Shafter is some of the most productive farmland in the United States, and the town has long served it. Shafter is known in agricultural circles for its cotton research station, where work on cotton varieties shaped much of the valley's crop. The railway through town and the grid of section-line roads both date from the valley's farming expansion.
A Shafter map poster is a study in straight lines. The town grid, the rail line and the field roads all run along the same compass directions, so the image has a calm, ordered quality. The only breaks are where newer subdivisions add curved streets to the older square blocks.

Rail through town
The railway passes straight through Shafter, a reminder of the agricultural shipping that built the town and a strong diagonal-free line on the map.
Old blocks and new loops
The older centre is laid out in straight blocks, while newer housing areas bring in curves and cul-de-sacs, showing how the town has grown over time.
