Tabula
Szeged sits on the Great Hungarian Plain close to where the Maros joins the Tisza, a few kilometres from the Serbian border. From above, its most striking feature is geometric: two semicircular boulevards, an inner and an outer ring, curve out from the riverbank and meet the water again, with radial avenues cutting through them like the spokes of half a wheel.
That plan is a direct result of disaster. The Tisza flood of 1879 destroyed most of the town, and the rebuilding that followed laid out the rings and avenues in one deliberate gesture. Sections of the outer boulevard were named after the European cities that sent help, a detail that turns an ordinary street map into a record of the recovery. The Votive Church and its square anchor the inner centre.
On a Szeged map poster the contrast between the ordered rings and the looser suburbs beyond reads very clearly. Across the Tisza, Újszeged spreads out on the flatter left bank, joined by bridges, while embankments trace the river's edge. The university, where Albert Szent-Györgyi carried out his vitamin C research, sits within the historic core that the rings enclose.
The inner and outer boulevards form two nested half-circles anchored on the Tisza, giving Szeged one of the most legible street plans of any Hungarian city.
The river bends past the centre inside flood embankments, a reminder that the 1879 flood shaped where and how the modern city was rebuilt.
Straight avenues run outward from the centre through both rings, cutting the half-wheel into segments that show up cleanly in black and white.

Cur Szeged
People hang Szeged for its university years, a summer of open-air theatre on Dóm Square, or family roots on the southern plain. Its rings make it one of the few cities whose plan is recognisable even without a label.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with a graduation year, and choose between Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Digital HD files cost $9, and printed posters are shipped from partners in over 30 countries.
