Szombathely Map Poster & Print
Szombathely lies in western Hungary, close to the Austrian border. On a map, the city has a compact historic centre of irregular streets and squares, surrounded by a ring of later districts. Main roads radiate from the centre toward the surrounding towns, and the small Perint stream runs through the city.
It is considered Hungary's oldest city. It was founded by the Romans in the first century as Savaria, a colony on the Amber Road, and later became the capital of the province of Pannonia Superior. Remains of the Roman town, including a temple to Isis, can still be seen. Saint Martin of Tours was born here in the fourth century.
A Szombathely map poster shows how a Roman settlement grew into a modern city. The old core stands at the centre, with later neighbourhoods arranged around it in a broad ring. Roads run outward toward Austria and the rest of Hungary. The layout is clear and balanced, and its long history shows in the plan.

Radiating roads
Main roads leave the centre in several directions toward the surrounding region and the Austrian border, giving the city a clear, star-like structure.
The Perint stream
A small stream runs through the city. It adds a thin, winding line of water among the streets and parks.
