Tajrīsh is a historic neighbourhood at the far north of Tehran, in the old district of Shemiran, where the city meets the foothills of the Alborz mountains. The change in terrain is clear on a map. The regular blocks of central Tehran give way to streets that climb and bend, and further north the city thins into valleys leading up into the mountains.
At its centre is Tajrīsh Square, the northern end of Valiasr Street, which is often called one of the longest avenues in the Middle East and runs south across the whole city. The covered Tajrīsh Bazaar and the shrine of Imamzadeh Saleh stand by the square. Their courtyards and passages form a dense cluster of small shapes among older streets and gardens.
Tajrīsh was once a summer retreat, valued for its cooler air and the water running down from the mountains, and paths into the Darband valley start nearby. Bazaar and shrine
The covered bazaar and the Imamzadeh Saleh shrine form a compact knot of narrow passages and courtyards, a finely detailed centre for the whole composition.
Alborz foothills
North of the square, streets begin to wind and climb along the slopes and valleys of the mountains, loosening into a softer, more organic pattern.
