Tabula
Times Square is defined by a single geometric accident. Broadway runs at a diagonal through Midtown Manhattan's rigid grid, and between 42nd and 47th Streets it crosses Seventh Avenue. The two avenues form an elongated X, and the triangular blocks and plazas left over create the familiar bowtie shape. On a map it looks like a small crease in an otherwise perfectly ruled sheet.
The area was called Longacre Square until 1904, when The New York Times moved into a new tower at its southern tip and the name changed. That building, One Times Square, is still where the ball drops on New Year's Eve. The surrounding blocks are home to the Broadway theatres, which spread west along the cross streets towards Eighth Avenue.
Since 2009, parts of Broadway through the square have been closed to traffic and turned into pedestrian plazas. The map shows the change as wider, calmer open space where lanes used to be. A Times Square map poster strips away the screens and signs. What remains is the underlying structure: a diagonal cut, a grid, and the knot where they meet.
Broadway and Seventh Avenue cross at a shallow angle. They leave two long triangles between 42nd and 47th Streets, the square's defining shape from above.
The narrow tower at the southern point of the bowtie gave the square its name. Each New Year's Eve, the ball drop happens from its roof.
The cross streets west of the square hold most of the Broadway theatres. On the map they appear as an even run of blocks between Seventh and Eighth Avenues.

Cur Times Square
A first night in New York, a show that mattered, a proposal under the lights or a New Year's Eve in the crowd: Times Square is often tied to a specific moment. A map lets you keep it without the noise.
Set the title, then add the date in the subtitle, such as a premiere, a first visit or an anniversary. The five styles range from Classic black & white to Noir. Noir, with its white streets on black, suits a place best known at night.
