Verkhniy Ufaley lies in the Middle Urals, in the north of Chelyabinsk Oblast near the border with Sverdlovsk Oblast. Like many towns in the region, it was founded around an ironworks in 1761, and the pond dammed to power the works still shapes the centre. Industry has stayed central to the town's identity, and in the twentieth century it became known for nickel production.
