Wesel Map Poster & Print

Wesel sits on the Lower Rhine at the point where the Lippe flows into it. That confluence shapes the whole map. The broad Rhine runs along the western side, the Lippe comes in from the east, and the town sits in the angle between them. A long road bridge carries traffic across the Rhine toward the left bank.

Wesel was a Hanseatic town and later a Prussian fortress, and traces of that past remain. The Zitadelle and the Berliner Tor gate survive, and the cathedral of St Willibrord stands in the centre. The town was almost entirely destroyed in the Second World War, and much of what the map shows was rebuilt afterwards.

A Wesel map poster brings the water and the town together. The wide Rhine, the smaller Lippe, the geometric outline of the citadel and the rebuilt streets fit into one frame. It works well for anyone who knows the Lower Rhine.

01

Rhine and Lippe

Two rivers meet here. The Rhine's wide band and the Lippe's narrower course form a clear triangle of land where the town developed.

02

The Zitadelle

The remains of the Prussian fortress still leave a recognisable angular footprint on the town plan. It is a small piece of military geometry among ordinary streets.

03

Rhine bridge

A long bridge crosses the river to the left bank. Its straight line spans the widest water in the frame and anchors the composition.
