The Georgian grid
Straight streets and regular blocks form the planned town centre. They set Whitehaven apart from the irregular layouts of most English towns of the period.

Tabula
Whitehaven lies on the west coast of Cumbria, facing the Irish Sea. It grew from a small village into a major port in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, developed by the Lowther family around coal exports and trade across the Atlantic. The town centre was laid out on a planned grid, among the earliest of its kind in post-medieval England.
In 1778, during the American Revolutionary War, John Paul Jones led a raid on Whitehaven harbour. It was the last time an enemy force landed on English soil. The harbour, with its piers and basins, is still the focus of the town, now used mainly by pleasure boats rather than coal ships.
A Whitehaven map poster shows a clear, deliberate plan. The Georgian grid runs down toward the harbour, and the pier walls curve out into the sea. Beyond the centre, the streets break into the hills and valleys of the West Cumbrian coast. It is an unusually legible town on paper.
Straight streets and regular blocks form the planned town centre. They set Whitehaven apart from the irregular layouts of most English towns of the period.
Stone piers and enclosed basins reach into the Irish Sea. Their curves and angles are the most distinctive shapes on the map.
Around the centre, the land rises to cliffs and hillsides. There, the streets turn and climb away from the planned grid.
