Contour roads
Roads curve and double back as they follow the hillsides. This gives the map flowing lines instead of right angles.

Xianfeng Map Poster & Print
Xianfeng is a town within the Chongqing municipality, in the hill country southwest of the main urban area. The terrain here is rarely flat. Low ridges and valleys follow one another, and settlements tend to gather where the ground opens out a little. The town's layout follows the landscape rather than any imposed plan.
On a map this appears as a compact centre with roads leaving it along the easiest lines through the hills. Many of those routes bend repeatedly as they follow the contours. Scattered hamlets and farm plots sit on the slopes around them. Small reservoirs and streams add irregular shapes to the country around the town.
A Xianfeng map poster captures a kind of place that is common in Chongqing but rarely drawn for its own sake: a working hill town between the city and the farmland. The composition is loose and winding, with a denser knot at the centre. It reads calmly on a wall, in a different way from the dense grids of the big city nearby.

Compact centre
Streets draw together into a small core wherever the valley floor is wide enough to build on. It is the densest part of the poster.
Hill farmland
The slopes around the town are dotted with small plots, ponds and hamlets. They show up as a light, scattered texture at the edges of the frame.
