Contour-following roads
The main roads curve with the hillsides instead of cutting across them, and that gives the whole print a flowing, organic look that stands apart from gridded plains cities.

Yunmen lies in the hilly country of Chongqing municipality, where very little ground is flat and the streets have to adapt to that. From above, the roads bend along the valley floors and around the slopes, and the built-up area gathers wherever the land levels out. There is no strict grid here. The plan follows the contours of the ground.
That kind of landscape is typical of the Sichuan Basin's eastern edge. Across the region, rivers have cut the hills into steep terraced slopes and narrow basins, and many towns have grown into long ribbons that follow the water. Newer districts climb the hillsides in wide switchbacks, while older lanes stay packed close together near the valley floor.
A Yunmen map poster turns that terrain into pure line work. Curving roads, the occasional straight arterial and the open patches of farmland between clusters of buildings create a lively pattern. You don't need to know the town to see the landscape in it, since the hills show through clearly in the way the streets are drawn.

Valley-floor core
The densest streets sit on the lowest, flattest ground. On the map that area appears as a darker knot of short lanes, with lighter slopes all around it.
Edges of farmland
Toward the edges of the frame, the settlement breaks up into small clusters separated by fields and hills, and the linework fades gently into open space.
