Zhengding lies on the flat North China Plain, directly north of Shijiazhuang across the Hutuo River. From above, the historic town is a compact enclosure of streets inside the line of its old walls, with temple compounds and pagodas scattered through the blocks. Beyond the walls, newer districts and broad avenues extend across the plain, and the regional airport lies further to the north-east.
For centuries Zhengding was one of the major towns of northern China, and it still keeps an unusual concentration of old buildings. Longxing Temple, founded in the sixth century, houses a towering Song-dynasty bronze Guanyin, and several ancient pagodas rise above the low rooftops. Sections of the city wall and its southern gate have been restored.
A Zhengding map poster shows the contrast between the tight historic core and the modern plain around it: the old wall line, the axial streets inside, the river corridor to the south and the new avenues beyond. Printed in black and white, the outline of the old town reads like a seal on the page.
The historic core keeps its roughly rectangular footprint, framed by the line of the former walls and gates. Inside, a network of lanes connects temple courtyards and small squares.
The temple complex occupies a long, axial plot within the old town, its halls and courtyards laid out in sequence. On the map it forms a distinct rectangular grain.
The broad, often shallow river runs along the south side of town, separating Zhengding from Shijiazhuang. Its wide bed and embankments add a strong horizontal band to the composition.
