Valley centre
The town's densest streets sit on the valley's flatter ground, forming a compact cluster that stands out clearly against the uneven land around it.

Zhuantang Map Poster & Print
Zhuantang lies in the hilly south of the Chongqing municipality, a region of steep ridges, narrow valleys and terraced fields. In terrain like this, the town cannot spread out evenly. Its streets gather on the flatter ground and follow the valleys. From above, the settlement looks stretched and irregular rather than square.
Roads leave the town by winding along the slopes, making tight curves as they climb and fall. Streams run through the valley bottoms, and around the town a fine pattern of terraces and small plots covers the hillsides. Even at poster scale, the landscape gives the map texture and depth.
A Zhuantang map poster reflects the way people have built around the mountains of southwest China. There is a compact centre on whatever level ground the valley offers, with roads bending to follow the contours. Around it lies a wide ring of hills that shape every line on the map.

Contour-hugging roads
Roads leaving town wind along the slopes in tight curves. They draw looping lines that show the steepness of the Chongqing hills.
Terraced hillsides
Farmland on the surrounding slopes forms a fine, layered pattern, filling the outer map with texture that sets it apart from lowland towns.
