Acre, known in Hebrew as Akko, sits on a small peninsula at the northern end of Haifa Bay, on the Mediterranean coast of Israel. From above, its old city is unmistakable. Thick sea walls follow the shoreline on the west and south, land walls close the peninsula to the north and east, and inside them a dense maze of alleys, courtyards and markets fills almost every space.
The city has been a port for thousands of years, and its layers are visible in its buildings. Beneath the Ottoman-era town lie extensive Crusader halls and tunnels, and the old city was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2001. In 1799, its walls held against a siege by Napoleon, whose campaign in the region ended there.
