Aioi lies in the west of Hyōgo Prefecture, where a long, narrow inlet cuts into the coast of the Harima Sea. On a map the bay is the defining shape, reaching deep into the land, with the town's streets gathered on the flat ground at its head and along its shores, and wooded hills rising steeply all around.
The city grew with shipbuilding, and the large yards on the waterfront remain some of the most distinctive forms on the map, their slipways and docks meeting the water at sharp angles. Aioi is also known for its Peron boat race festival, held on the bay each year.
