The city is organised around the Kakogawa River, a broad river that runs north to south through the plain and into the Seto Inland Sea. Its wide channel and embankments cut the map cleanly in two, and bridges link the residential districts on either side.
The central area gathers around the railway station and the main roads. From there, dense neighbourhoods of small streets stretch out across flat land that was once largely rice fields. Toward the south, the plan changes character. Large, rectangular industrial plots and reclaimed land reach out into the sea, and the shoreline becomes straight and engineered.
