Al Qunayţirah was once the main town of the Golan Heights, sitting on the basalt plateau between the Sea of Galilee and Damascus, with Mount Hermon rising to the north. It stood on routes linking Syria with the lands to the west, and its streets formed a largely regular pattern around the main road passing through it.
The town was largely destroyed in 1974, before Israeli forces withdrew under the disengagement agreement that followed the 1973 war. It now lies within the area of separation monitored by the United Nations, and much of it has remained in ruins, while newer settlement has developed nearby.
