Alexandria was laid out in 1749 on the western bank of the Potomac River, and its original plan still defines Old Town. Straight streets run in a regular grid from the waterfront inland, with King Street as the main axis. On a map the historic core reads as a neat rectangle of small blocks, pressed against the river and denser than anything around it.
George Washington knew the town well, and his connection is marked by Christ Church, where he had a pew, and by the George Washington Masonic National Memorial, whose tower stands on Shooter's Hill at the western end of King Street. The Torpedo Factory Art Center, a former munitions plant, now houses artist studios on the waterfront.
Beyond Old Town the city extends west and north into later neighbourhoods, with the Capital Beltway crossing the Potomac to the south on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge and Washington, D.C. just across the water.
