Amberg, in the Upper Palatinate region of Bavaria, has one of the most complete medieval town plans in Germany. On the map, the old town is a clear oval, still mostly enclosed by its walls and gates, and ringed by a green belt where the moat once ran. The river Vils flows straight through the middle and divides it into two halves.
The best-known sight is the Stadtbrille, the town's spectacles. It is a double-arched structure that carries the old fortifications across the Vils, and its arches reflect in the water as two round lenses. Amberg grew rich on iron mining and trade in the Middle Ages. East of the town, the Mariahilfberg rises with its pilgrimage church.
