Apia stretches along the north coast of Upolu, the second-largest island of Samoa, around a small natural harbour. On the map the town is long and low. It follows Beach Road as the road curves around the waterfront, with the Mulinu'u peninsula extending to the west and the Vaisigano River reaching the sea close to the centre.
Behind the coastal strip, roads run inland in loose parallel lines toward the forested slopes of the interior, forming a series of villages and neighbourhoods rather than a single dense centre. Mulinu'u, a slim tongue of land, holds the parliament and other government sites. Offshore, a reef encloses much of the harbour, and its edge shows as a separate line in the water.
In 1889 a cyclone struck Apia harbour and wrecked several German and American warships at anchor there. On the slopes above the town is Vailima, the last home of the writer Robert Louis Stevenson, who is buried on nearby Mount Vaea.
